Since 2016 Erik Bijzet Sculpture and Works of Art buys and sells fine sculpture from the Middle Ages, Renaissance, Baroque, Neoclassicism and the 19th and early 20th centuries, as well as early works of art on a smaller scale, such as enamels, ivories, jewellery, stained glass and metalwork. The gallery serves an international clientele, ranging from beginning collectors to major museums including the Musée du Louvre, the Rijksmuseum, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. In addition, Erik advises collectors and museums, writes scholarly texts, and provides free and non-binding valuations.
Erik Bijzet is the former Head of Auction Sales of the European Sculpture and Works of Art department at Sotheby’s in London. During his eight years at Sotheby’s Erik brought numerous high profile collections to the market including The John Winter Collection, The Gustav Rau Collection, and Defining Taste: Works selected by Danny Katz as well as several major discoveries, such as the Syon Virgin, a 13th-century ivory Virgin and Child from a Dutch private collection. In 2012, he became Sotheby’s youngest director and auctioneer.
Erik is the co-author of the catalogues of the Neutelings collection in the Bonnefantenmuseum Maastricht and the Schoufour-Martin collection in Museum Boijmans van Beuningen Rotterdam. He often contributes scholarly articles to such publications as the Bulletin of the Rijksmuseum and the Sculpture Journal.
